The Temple of Umm Ubayda at the Siwa Oasis in Egypt
In the oasis of Siwa in Egypt, there are two temples dedicated to Amun. The best known is the Temple of the Oracle, while the latter is now known as Umm Obeida (or Obeida, or slaves), which could be a corruption of the name or the temple as he was known in 1800. As it was two thousand years, and is located amid a grove of trees a short distance from the rock Aghurmi. Temple once and joined the Temple of the Oracle of the bridge and an integral part of the rituals associated with the Oracle of God.
The site features a large area ground white. Wall is only one day from the ruins, but the close of a series of large stone blocks. Each of these blocks appear to be registered, and in some places are still visible color.
Pyramid was built during the rule of 30, and mentioned in the story of Alexander the Great visited the oasis after the occupation of Egypt. Until the early 19th, many of the temple is preserved, but in 1811 and the quake caused great loss of the site. However, visitors to the site between 1819 and 1821, including Cayo, von Drovetti Minutoli, still to a large extent the situation of the temple, despite the fact that some blocks that had fallen from the roof and one wall structure supported. Then in 1897, one of the Siwa Ma'murs gunpowder and placed in the foundation of the temple and blew it up to get the stones on the stairs of the police station and Hassunah Palace to build your home. So, what can the time and the nature of his work was done by a government official in a few minutes ignorant.
Above all, we know that the plan of this temple, and produced by visitors century 19th. Faced north, and was surrounded by walls of the belt. The wall was square. Although many parts of the fallen temple of the century 19th, pronaos and Mazar-i is still present, and above there was a hall with columns. Inside the walls, and front of the temple which was built in the area raised by the blocks of marble. One of them, either an altar or pedestal of a statue of the god Amon, was decorated on all four sides with the representation of Amun in the form of the human head with ram horns.
Thanks von Minutoli, we have an idea of the order of scenes on the wall of the Temple at least. For example, on the opposite wall in the same room a place in one very like it. In his paintings, and we know that the construction was the king of Nectanebo II, ruler of the 30 active strain is one of the most active builders in the late period of Egyptian history.
On the wall still exists, there is a long text in the upper section consists of fifty-one and three lines of records that represent different gods. In developing countries, von Minutoli the wall above is the text which had a decoration that was a frieze above. Was repeated at the head of cartridge King Eagle Nekhbet protected by God. Against this background, a series of figures to make some celebrations of the rite of "opening the mouth. It sank in the area of relief, and this is the beginning of the text of the rite.
Under the inscriptions are three rows of figures, each carved a prominent, first and foremost see the real builder of the Temple. It was named Wenamun, who was the "Great and the President of the desert." Take the ostrich feathers in her hair to show that he deserves from Libya, and was governor of Siwa in the construction of the temple, which represent the kneel before the god Amun, who is sitting in a shrine. Al Qaeda is behind the seven gods, and scored an average of nine deities appeared once, but now there are only eight. Register now at the bottom there are only three gods represented, although the figures in 1820 have been preserved.
What is most important in these writings is the text of the ritual to open the mouth. It is more common in the papyri, in coffins, or in some cases on the walls of tombs, as it relates to the funeral. However, the text appears in funerary temple and the walls of the prayer and, therefore, this temple may have served somewhat memorial for Wenamun, which can not be buried away from this site.
The inscriptions provide us with von Minutoli and destroyed parts of the walls, one of the most important to maintain Wenamun top with a feather in her hair, standing in front of God in the temple. The machine is also wearing a feather in his hair, which can refer to the Libyan origin, or at least some sort of Libya. This may lead us to believe that this was probably the ancient god who was worshiped in Siwa before the rule of Tutankhamun. Unfortunately, his name is not preserved, and there are other scenes that are similar in Siwa.
It is unfortunate that this temple was destroyed even today, it was clear that closely linked to the Temple of Oracle. There is no doubt more information will surface two days when the ruins of Egyptologists finally decide it's worth, and the completion of the excavation work.
