The Temple of Osiris and the Other Temples of Abydos


Abydos in Middle Egypt is sacred, and the tomb of the ancient rulers of the Kingdom in the late prehistoric period primitive, and the first kings of ratification politically unified Egyptian state. Buildings which form the settlement in the north of Abydos, dating back to prehistoric times have been found around the Kom Al-Sultan, while the recent excavations found in a residential area in the Old Kingdom, to the southeast, which includes a street of mud houses , and yards and a workshop with the pottery oven.


This was probably the main area of worship of the god Osiris, who gained popularity to the point that, from the Kingdom of East, a trip to the ritual of Abydos are often represented in special cemeteries in other parts of Egypt. In fact, Osiris, and continued to gain popularity in most of the ancient history of Egypt. Therefore, it is not surprising that a number of kings built the temple in this place.
We have discussed elsewhere some of the temples and the main features of Abydos, including the mortuary temple of Seti I and Osireion, a small temple built by Ramses II and Tuthmosis III built one, and even the pyramid and the mortuary temple of Ahmose. However, there are at least one additional important temple, and a series of simple structures that do not have really covered in any detail.
The Temple of Osiris
And to the north-west of the temple of Ramses II in the area known as the Kom es-Sultan was the old church built of milk, and probably dating from the Old Kingdom, dedicated to God Khenty Amentiu (or Khentiamentiu) "The most important of the West", which was important funerary deity. Become associated later with Osiris, god of the dead, and finally was fully synchronized with Osiris.
Artifacts that represent the Kings dating back to the beginning of dynastic era to the Greco-Roman era have been found here, but little structure remains today. These include a fragment of a vessel of the 1st Dynasty King Aha, and small figures of men and animals during the same period. However, most of the rulers of the Old Kingdom and see here, in the form of a series of rulers in the Middle and New Kingdom, Amenhotep I, Tuthmosis III and Amenhotep III, who carried out the reconstruction of all the projects here.
About all that remains of this temple is one of the wall, which became known as the location of the Temple of Osiris. Soon, was built with the exception of the doors, stone and most of what is lost.
East of the Kingdom, and was completely associated with the temple of Osiris, and will be nationally significant in Egypt, and was almost certainly here that the annual festival of Osiris originated.
