Qasr Ibrim in ancient Nubia

Before the construction of the Aswan High Dam south of Aswan, and the palace was Ibrim in the upper part of the three heads on the eastern bank of the River Nile, about 70 feet above river. Today, it is usually an island, in spite of the times in the lake that were revealed by a bridge linking the island to the coast. Today, this is the last resort in Lake Nasser, Abu Simbel before, but visitors can only watch from the comfort of Lake Nasser cruise boat, and can no longer be accessed by the tourists. However, the Egypt Exploration Society is to continue to work on the site, as it has done since 1959.
Palace in Arabic means "strong" to its name in English means Ibrim strong. Its name is derived from the name in the end the old irrigated, Pedeme. In the classical texts, and was called Primis Coptic Phrim, which was damaged Ibrim in Arabic.
Really do not know the exact origin of the site, but may have been originally built in the Middle Kingdom, Dynasty when he was 12 to control the trade route along the West River Nile. However, the first evidence of an archaeological site back to around 1000 BC, long after the end of the Middle Kingdom. Obviously, your site so high over the Nile admitted to their strategic importance from the beginning, in fact, there was a struggle for possession over the centuries, and even in modern times.
After the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra at Actium in 31 BC, Egypt became part of the empire, Romanian, and was about to have a garrison of the Roman era settled in Aswan. It came under attack from the Nubians, and possibly under the name of the queen of Amanirenas, which captured and held for a short period and Aswan, Elephantine and Philae. However, the Nubians were driven south, where the Romans occupied the palace Ibrim soon. In the era of the Roman Emperor Augustus, when he was the local governor Gaius Petronius, Romanian hopes to develop its southern borders in this place, but the Nubians to attack again, after the peace treaty drawn up and the Romans withdrew. Others come and go, so that the site was not completely abandoned until the year 1811.
The first evidence of the inscriptions found on the site is following the reign of Amenhotep I spent the early New Kingdom. This stele dating back to the eighth year of King of Kings, and is now in the British Museum in London. In fact, discovered in a Christian basilica in the place that has been used in a basement.
While it is certainly not of strategic importance, and it was clearly an important site, very religious, during and after the Pharaonic period. Spare a bumpy road and facing the ancient capital in the region known as Miam (Aniba modern), or four tombs dating to the era of the modern state. Created by local officials is high, and participate in local forms of Horus, and the gods of the First Cataract, and Hathor, who arrived here the guardian of the missions. However, given the possibility of destruction due to high water level in Lake Nasser, and went to the holy sites. Usersatet mausoleum was built by the governor during the reign of Amenhotep Kush II was removed and rebuilt in the Nubia Museum in Aswan new. And others are not built from this date, but maybe in the future lies in the new Sabo. In addition, a painting from the tomb of Seti I has already been transferred to the new Kalabsha where he was re-styled the south of the major Ptolemaic temple at that site. Unfortunately, cemeteries, on both sides of the high ground in the old Palace Ibrim we have had under the waters of Lake Nasser.
Earliest religious structure remaining in place was a temple built in the reign of King Taharqa. Palace Ibrim flourished in the years following the attacks at the heart of the temple built by King Tahraqo been repaired and many new temples were built. These temples have gained a reputation as places of healing, and often visited by those seeking treatment.
Ibrim Palace has a history of exploitation against the invasion of the new religions and here, the traditional Egyptian gods worshiped remains long after Christianity took root and became the official religion of the empire of Romania. Even after the ancient Egyptian temples in other places were closed, and after the dictates of Theodosius I in 390 AD, and the short Ibrim continued to flourish. However, the structure of the King Taharqa later became a Christian church, while the Temple of Isis, located at the site was completely destroyed. In the seventh century, the Cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built from blocks of ancient temples. Site became a major center for pilgrimage and later a bishop. It is interesting, and many of the pilgrims left the carved representation of the feet in place to record your trip.
Cemetery sound Bishop Timothy, who was buried here in the late fourteenth century AD, found in the north of the cathedral crypt. The funeral also included letters of appointment of the Patriarch of Alexandria, which dates back to 1372 AD. Christian cemeteries simple affairs during this period, and the bodies of the dead were usually wrapped in paper and placed in a pit covered with stones and bricks or on the deck. Funerary no longer provide for the burial of ordinary people. However, the clergy were more splendid. Council, Bishop Timothy Bishop buried in his robes with his iron cross benedictional and other belongings. These are now in the British Museum in London, along with a page from the Book of Revelation, written in the ancient Nubian language using the Coptic alphabet. These artifacts were discovered in Ibrm Palace.
Once again, the Christian community and has stood for many centuries after the conquest of Egypt by Muslims. It was not until the sixteenth century that Christianity eventually replaced by Islam, after Egypt was conquered by the Ottoman Turks, and the guardian of mercenaries in Bosnia has been installed.
