Philae Temples Part V: Other Structures on the Island

There are a number of other effects, as well as the Temple of Isis, who were transferred from the island of Philae to Agilika, and some features that are unusual. To the north of Hadrian's Gate on the west side of the island and the Temple of Isis is the destruction of the Temple which was built by Emperor Claudius and dedicated to Harendotes, "Horus the protector (or revenge) of the father", one of the many forms of Horus.
To the north of the Temple of Isis is the ruined Temple of Augustus, which was built in the eighteenth year of his reign. In particular, a stone with Cornelius Gallus inscription in three languages, found here. Frenchman who was the Roman governor was appointed for the first time after the death of Cleopatra VII. Now, at the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo, who scored the victory when he succeeded in suppressing a rebellion in Egypt in 29 BC. To the north of the Romanian city is the gate that leads to the pavement, and was built by the Romans in the north-eastern side of the island. Perhaps this was the door magnificent Arc de Triomphe, built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian.
To the south of here in the east of the island adjacent to the main compound of the Temple of Isis and the Temple of Hathor, built by Ptolemy VI and VIII Euergetes Ptolemy II. It consists of a hall with columns and patio. Hallway was decorated by Augustus, and full of holes, the parties in recognition of Isis and Hathor, the goddess Aphrodite and Greece all the pleasures of the senses. Here we find scenes of the music and drink. Augustus offers ceremony and a wreath of flowers to Isis and Nephthys. Peas are also, playing on the tambourine and play a chord, while a monkey playing on the lute. In fact, the flute, guitarists and dancing monkeys on the flow of the columns, while the priests are in the antelope of the party.
In the far south is the last major monument in the island itself, which always seems to attract the attention of visitors. This is called the stalls, sometimes called "Pharaoh's bed." Rectangular building has fourteen columns with carved capitals beautiful flowers that were supported in the wooden ceiling. Only two of the screen walls between the columns had been completed. It refers to the emperor Trajan burning incense before Isis and Osiris, Isis, Horus offered wine. Kiosk is often attributed to Trajan, but it could have been built before, and perhaps in the reign of Augustus. In an unfinished building is one of the most popular features of the elephants and was in ancient times and official entry to the island.
In addition to these effects, and there are also two of the old Coptic churches and the remains of the Coptic monastery. Said, there were up to two other Christian churches on the island of origin, and Bishop Philae is mentioned in 362 AD. Philae Island origin that contain a solution of mud-brick remains in the northern part of the island, east and south-east, which would have originally comprised of officials who served in the temple, but these structures are no longer under water from the lake.
Before leaving the elephants, we must also mention the Bigeh Island (Biggeh and Vega), located just south of the new elephants and a little west of the island of origin. At the beginning of the Roman era, and this site has come to consider all of the tomb of Osiris, and the source of the River Nile, which was believed to be the case from a cave in the depths of the island. Shrine was built there in ancient times, but in a restricted zone on people, and thus became known in Greek as Abaton, or "prohibited place". According to legend, and was buried in the left leg of Osiris here after his body had been cut by his brother Seth. Burial in Bigeh was said to be surrounded by 365 priests, where the massacres group offers daily milk. Despite the beginning of the elephants near the most important religious, Bigeh therefore remain outside the regular session for the development of building temples and growth, so it was elephants, which was held in place. The remainder of the small temple in Bigeh is on the eastern side of the island, opposite the original location of elephants.
Once every ten days and annual festivals, do the statue of Isis Temple of Philae to visit the grave of her husband in Bigeh.
It is hard to overestimate the importance of the religious complex at Philae. It provides us an important center of worship for the delay, which is maintained exceptionally well. Of the Saite period up to the 30th dynasty underwent a huge boom in the Greco-Roman, and given the circumstances and dismantling and disposal, there may be a unique vision of urban development up to and including the transformation into a center of Christianity. As the last bastion of culture and ancient Egyptian religion, it is no coincidence that the latest date the hieroglyphic writing (24 August 394 AD) come from elephants. Last Demotic inscription found here, too, dating back to 452 AD.
It seems very appropriate to leave the elephants in the words of Amelia Edwards, as they leave the island:
"It was a hot day, and there is calm on the river. Making my past is over, I wander slowly around the side to side, to bid farewell to Pharaoh's bed - painted columns - each terrace, palm haven, and Y family perspective. I came back to the room mystic Osiris, and I see the sunset seen from the roof of the Temple of Isis, then when all this wonderful pink and gold is gold, is that it sparkles. there are no words that can paint the beauty and sadness of the elephants at this time, the surrounding mountains and irregular, purple highlights the amber sky pale, and the Nile of the glass, not breathing, and not just a bubble, invested problems landscapes. palm every weakness, and weakness of each stone. and big rocks on the mid flow reflected fully that it is impossible to know where the rock ends and water begins, and the churches, in the same time have been used thin gilded bronze, and the towers are populated by figures that glow with a wonderful life, and you're ready to withdraw from the workplace.
Solitude is perfect, and there is a quiet magic in the air. I hear the mother sing to her baby in a nearby island - a song bird in the nest in the capital column under the feet - an eagle screaming piteously between the rocks in the distance.
I hope, I listen, I promise myself I will remember all of this in the coming years - all of these summits, the official silence of these columns, and this deep, quiet places of the shadows, and this palm sleep. Continuing until it is almost night in bed I left them last, for fear that they do not see them more. "
